How I Deal With Creative Blockades as a Freelancer in Design, Web & Dev

Let’s be real — creative blockades are the worst.
One day you’re in the flow, designing like a god, coding like it’s second nature — and the next day, your brain’s just like: “nah.”

I’ve been freelancing for a while now (design, web, development — a bit of everything), and I’ve had my fair share of those stuck moments. Here’s how I usually deal with them:

1. I Don’t Force It

I used to sit there, staring at my screen for hours, hoping some divine spark would hit.
Spoiler: it never did 😂
Now I just walk away. Go for a walk, grab a coffee, touch some grass, or even play a round of something.
When I come back, ideas usually start connecting again — because I gave my brain some breathing room.

2. I Switch Things Up

If I’m blocked on a design, I jump to code. If I’m stuck in code, I start sketching random stuff.
It’s funny how switching contexts resets your creativity.
Different sides of the brain, different energy — it works.

3. I Change the Vibe

Sometimes it’s not me — it’s the environment.
So I move. A new café, a co-working space, or even just my balcony with lo-fi beats.
New setting = new thoughts. Every time.

4. I Talk It Out

I’ll rant to a friend or another freelancer about what’s blocking me.
Half the time, while explaining the problem, I figure it out myself.
Brain hack unlocked 😅

5. I Make Something Useless

This one’s my fave.
I start a small “just for fun” project — no goal, no client, no expectations.
A random color palette, a fake landing page, a silly animation.
It gets me back into play mode, which is where creativity actually lives.

At the End of the Day…

Creative blocks don’t mean you suck.
They just mean your brain needs a break or new input.
So don’t stress it — go live a little.
Inspiration always sneaks back in when you least expect it.
